Tartar Sauce Ingredients
The base of this homemade sauce uses both mayonnaise and greek yogurt. From there it builds up with pickles, capers, parsley, chives, and lemon juice.
Old bay seasoning is a great addition for adding even more flavor! You can also sprinkle in salt and pepper if desired.
How To Make Homemade Tartar Sauce
- Mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl and stir thoroughly to combine.
- Serve immediately or for best taste, I recommend serving after it’s been in the refrigerator for at least two hours.
How To Serve
- Fried Fish
- Fish Sticks

- Crispy Shrimp
Make more!
If you’re feeding a crowd and need a larger batch just double or triple the ingredients on the recipe card. This will ensure that the ratios stay the same for the best flavoring!
How To Store
Homemade Tartar sauce will last up to two weeks in the refrigerator stored in an airtight container. This certainly helps with making it ahead of time when you know there’s a fish dinner in the near future!
Variations and Substitutions
- If you don’t have capers you can easily substitute them for more pickles or relish of your choosing.
- For a tangy, sharp flavor with a little bit of spice, you can try adding in some dijon mustard, vinegar, or Cocktail Sauce!
- Swap out the pickles for dill relish, sweet relish, or even pickle relish! You’ll still get a pickle flavor just in a different variation. Sweet pickles like my Bread & Butter Pickles are also a delicious option.
- If you want the added onion flavor without the crunch, mix in a little bit of onion powder!
- Want some heat? Add some cayenne pepper to taste.

Homemade Tartar Sauce
Ingredients
- ⅔ cup mayonnaise
- ⅓ cup Greek yogurt
- 1 cup chopped pickles
- 3 teaspoons finely chopped capers
- 2 tablespoons chopped parsley
- 2 tablespoons chopped chives
- 1-2 teaspoons lemon juice
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon old bay seasoning optional
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a bowl and stir to combine. Can be served immediately, but tastes best after refrigerated for 2 hours.
Notes
- Chop finely or leave bigger pieces depending on how chunky you want the sauce to be.
- If you don’t have capers, you can substitute them with additional pickles.
- I sometimes like to add some lemon zest and Old Bay Seasoning to my tartar sauce for even more flavor.
- Usually, there is no extra salt needed but it gets better with some freshly ground pepper.
- This sauce will get better when it had a chance to sit a bit and let all flavors infuse the mayonnaise and yogurt. You can make it in advance and it will stay good for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.
