What is a Bahama Mama?
A Bahama Mama is a tropical cocktail with a rum base and fruit juices.
What does a Bahama Mama taste like?
This is a fruity “girly” drink made with orange and pineapple juice. The addition of coconut rum and grenadine only enhances the tropical flavors while the dark room adds a deep flavor that helps to balance it all out.
What Is In A Bahama Mama
Pick up your favorite dark rum and coconut rum at the store and get started making up this classic Drink! This cocktail comes together quickly using:
- Dark Rum – This will balance the coconut rum out with its spicy dimension.
- Coconut Rum – Adds that fresh, sweet tropical coconut flavoring to this cocktail.
- Orange Juice – I recommend using a pulp-free orange juice but you can choose what you like!
- Pineapple Juice – I used canned 100% Dole Pineapple Juice but you could use a bottled option as well.
- Grenadine – Making this syrup right at home gives this cocktail an even more fresh and flavorful taste! If you’re looking to speed things up you can always use store-bought too!
- Ice – For shaking and serving over! Use cubes or crushed ice, whatever you prefer!
- Garnishes – I like to use maraschino cherries and pineapple wedges to really dress this fun cocktail up!
How to Make a Bahama Mama
- Shake the dark rum, coconut rum, grenadine, pineapple, and orange juice together in a cocktail shaker with ice vigorously.
- Strain into a glass with ice.
- Garnish with maraschino cherries and a pineapple wedge!

How to Serve a Bahama Mama Cocktail
Ice cold with lots of garnishes! You’ll also want to make sure to include a straw, this ensures that you’re not getting watered down sips off the top.
Bahama Mama Cocktail Recipe storage
Because there’s no carbonated ingredients, you can make a large batch and store it in the fridge for at least a week! I recommend going by the best by date on your orange juice.
Bahama Mama Drink Recipe FAQs
This Bahama Mama Cocktail Recipe makes one drink. Simply repeat the ingredients and instructions for as many drinks as you would like… or can handle!
Yes, you can! Just add all the ingredients into a blender with crushed ice and blend until it becomes slushy.
This one boils down to personal preference. When Bahama Mamas first became popular coffee liqueur was indeed involved but has evolved over time. I prefer it without the coffee liqueur, but feel free to add a splash of Kahlua!
Even though they are both rum based drinks, they are actually very different in flavor. A Bahama Mama will be much sweeter than a Mai Tai that’s to all the extra juices. A Mai Tai also has a signature flavor that comes from the orgeat syrup used in it. Orgeat is made with almonds and rose or orange watch which makes it very distinct.
Usually around 10-15% ABV depending on how you make it.
Nope, not at all. But if heat is your thing, try out our Spicy Margarita recipe!
No, even though they are both made with coconut rum, the pineapple is much more prevalent and the other flavors in the drink are much stronger than the coconut. I would say Pina Coladas are on the mild end of fruity and Bahama Mamas are much more intense.
