Bang Bang Shrimp Taco Recipe FAQs
Can I Bake These In The Oven Or Use An Air Fryer?
Yes, you can! For baking, cook them spread over a wire rack and place it onto a baking sheet. Then cook the shrimp at 400 degrees F for 15 minutes.
For air frying, place them in the air fryer at 400 degrees F for 9 minutes. If you’d like you could also try grilling them!
Is This A Dish I Can Prepare Ahead Of Time?
Partially. You could prepare the sauce and put the coating on the shrimp the night before. Then when you’re ready to serve just fry up the shrimp and then toss them in the prepared sauce!
Can I Use Bread Crumbs Instead Of Panko?
When I make this recipe I find that regular store-bought bread crumbs are too fine of a texture for the shrimp.
What Can I Substitute For The Mayonnaise In The Sauce?
If you’re looking to swap out the mayonnaise you can use Greek yogurt or sour cream instead.
Can I Just Use Milk Instead Of Buttermilk?
Unfortunately no, that wouldn’t work. But you can create your own buttermilk substitute by adding 2 1/4 teaspoon of vinegar or lime juice to a 3/4 measuring cup. Then fill the measuring cup up with milk and allow it to sit for around 10 minutes.
Are these Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos really spicy?
It actually isn’t, no. But you could adjust the spice level by adding more or less sriracha.

Bang Bang Taco Recipe
Equipment
- Medium mixing bowl
- Large mixing bowl
- Whisk
- Heavy bottom pan
- Kitchen thermometer
Ingredients
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ¼ cup sweet chili sauce
- 2 teaspoons honey
- 1 teaspoon sriracha
- 2-3 cups vegetable oil
- ¾ cup buttermilk
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 2 Tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 pound raw medium shrimp peeled and deveined
- 1 cup Panko crumbs
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
- green onion optional garnish
- tortillas for serving
- slaw for servng
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, honey, and sriracha to make the sauce. Set this aside.
- In a separate, large bowl, whisk buttermilk, flour, and cornstarch together.
- Stir the shrimp into the buttermilk mixture, covering evenly. Set this aside.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the Panko, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper.
- Place the oil into a heavy bottom pan. You want to have about 1 inch of oil in the pan. Turn the heat to medium. (If you have a kitchen thermometer, you want to get the temperature to about 375°F.)
- When the oil is being heated, lightly strain the shrimp, then dredge in the panko mixture, and place in the hot oil. It will only take a minute or 2 per side to be fully cooked. Only fry a few shrimp at a time or the oil temperature will drop and you won’t get a crispy texture.
- When you remove the shrimp from the frying pan, place it briefly on a plate lined with a paper towel to absorb excess oil. Then toss the shrimp with the sauce.
