This Lasagna Roll Up Recipe is a fun twist on the classic family favorite recipe! Loaded with ricotta cheese, parmesan cheese, mozzarella cheese, and Italian seasoning flavor, it’ll still have everything you love about Lasagna except for the pesky layers!
You Will Love Rolled Lasagna
Why layer Lasagna when you can roll it up? It’s like fruit roll-ups for adults and I’m here for every last bite of saucy, cheesy rolled up goodness.
Don’t worry, this Rolled Lasagna Recipe has all the same classic, comfort food flavoring of marinara sauce, cheeses, and Italian seasonings. It’s just all rolled-up into fun, easy-to-serve rolls that are super delicious!
This recipe is great to make ahead to pop in the oven on a busy weeknight or to deliver to a new mom. And since there aren’t any messy layers to slice up, it’s also great for potlucks or for serving a large crowd!
What are Lasagna Rolls?
Lasagna Rolls have all the same yummy flavors and textures of your classic lasagna with the only difference being how they’re assembled in the pan. Instead of layered lasagna, we take the cheese filling and spread it out onto each lasagna noodle and then roll it up like a fruit roll up!
The rolls of lasagna are then tucked snuggly into a baking dish, covered with marinara sauce, and cheese, and then baked until melty, cheesy deliciousness.
Lasagna Roll Ups Recipe Ingredients
You’ll find that Lasagna Roll Ups have about all the same ingredients you would find in a homemade lasagna recipe. Therefore, this recipe is more about technique than ingredients! To make a batch you’ll need lasagna noodles that are cooked until al dente and then drained.
For the cheese filling we combine ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese, grated parmesan cheese, and an egg. The filling is then seasoned with minced garlic, chopped basil, dried oregano, dried Italian seasonings, salt, and pepper.
I opt for my homemade Marinara Sauce when making this recipe, however, you can use your own favorite recipe or grab jarred sauce from the store to keep it quick! For a meaty lasagna, grab ground beef and Italian sausage (or a combination of both!) to cook and crumble up to add to the marinara sauce.
Before baking the Lasagna Roll Ups are sprinkled with more mozzarella cheese!
How To Make Lasagna Rolls
- Prepare by first preheating the oven.
- Cook the lasagna noodles until they are al dente and then drain them out on a clean kitchen towel.
- Combine ricotta cheese, shredded mozzarella cheese, grated parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, chopped basil, dried oregano, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl.
- Fold cooked and crumbled ground beef or Italian sausage into the cheese mixture if you’re using meat.
- Spread a portion of marinara sauce into the bottom of the baking dish.
- Spread a scoop of the cheese mixture out evenly onto each lasagna noodle. Then start from one end and roll the noodle up tightly.
- Transfer the tightly rolled lasagna into the baking dish seam-side down. Repeat the process with all of the lasagna noodles.
- Pour the remaining marinara sauce over the baking dish of lasagna roll-ups. Then sprinkle the top with grated mozzarella cheese.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and then bake in the preheated oven. Uncover the baking dish with 5 minutes left of time and continue baking it until the cheese is bubbly and slightly golden brown.
- Cool the lasagna roll-ups slightly before garnishing with chopped fresh basil and then serve!
Making This Lasagna Roll Ups Recipe In Advance
This recipe is a great pop-in-the-oven meal to have in the fridge for busy weeknights! For make-ahead lasagna, all you have to do is prep it according to the recipe instructions, and then, instead of sliding it into the oven to bake, place it in the fridge.
The prepped lasagna can remain tightly covered in the fridge to bake off when you’re ready for up to 2 days.
- Only cook the pasta on the stovetop until its al dente, which means there’s still a slight bit of firmness when you bite the noodle. Since the noodles also get baked in the oven, we want to prevent overcooking the noodles on the stovetop so that they don’t turn to mush when baked.
- I love making this lasagna with my homemade Marinara Sauce but you can also make it with your favorite jarred sauce instead.
- If you love a meaty lasagna, you can cook and crumble up ground beef or Italian sausage to add to the marinara sauce. However, for a meatless lasagna just skip out on adding any meat!
- Make sure to spread a little bit of sauce on the bottom of the baking dish before placing the lasagna roll ups into it. This little sauce trick prevents the lasagna from sticking to the bottom of the pan!
- It’s important to place the lasagna roll-ups seam side down into the pan to prevent them from breaking open during baking.
- I’ve found that freshly grated cheeses melt up much nicer than storebought grated cheese; therefore, if you can, grate your own parmesan and mozzarella cheese!
How To Serve Rolled Lasagna
Serve Rolled Lasagna up with a fresh side salad full of crisp veggies and then follow it up with lasagna’s best friend, garlic bread! We love enjoying our homemade lasagna with Parmesan Garlic Bread or a batch of Easy Garlic Parmesan Breadsticks.
If you want to skip garlic bread, this recipe would also be great with a batch of Classic Parker House Dinner Rolls or even Homemade Yeast Rolls. Both are great at soaking up every last drop of marinara sauce!
Storing Lasagna Roll-Ups
Transfer the cooled leftover lasagna roll-ups to an airtight container, or alternatively, you can store them in the baking dish covered tightly with aluminum foil. Store the covered lasagna in the fridge for up to 3 days.
How To Freeze Rolled Lasagna
If you plan to freeze this dish for lasagna roll ups, I recommend assembling it in a disposable aluminum pan. This will make storing, baking, and cleaning up ALL a breeze!
Once you have the lasagna assembled in the pan you can either freeze it before cooking it or freeze it after. Either way, tightly wrap the pan of lasagna with layers of aluminum foil for storage and then transfer it into the freezer to store for up to 3 months.
Thaw the frozen lasagna in the fridge overnight before cooking it the next day according to the instructions on the recipe card.
Tips For Reheating Lasagna Rolls
To reheat lasagna roll-ups, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and transfer them to a baking dish lightly sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Bake the roll-ups for 20 to 25 minutes.
You can also reheat lasagna roll ups in the microwave or even in the air fryer for 10 minutes at 350 degrees F.
