Homemade Berry Compote Recipe Ingredients
Making homemade berry compote calls for simple, minimal ingredients that can be customized to create your ideal taste! To start, choose your frozen berries. I enjoy using mixed berries for a variety of flavors; however, you can use any kind of frozen fruit that you prefer.
If mixed berries aren’t your thing, then you can use all of one type of berry such as all blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, cherries, or even peaches.
Your choice of frozen berries then combines with light brown sugar, salted butter, and vanilla extract. To cozy up the flavoring of this fruit compote you can then add ground cinnamon though this can be omitted if you prefer.
How To Make Mixed Berry Compote From Scratch
- Combine frozen mixed berries with light brown sugar in a small pot over medium-high heat. Heat until the mixture begins to simmer.
- Remove the mixture from the heat and stir in salted butter and vanilla extract.
- Serve warm as a topping for breakfast or dessert!
- Sweetener – If you prefer, you can use granulated sugar in place of light brown sugar. You can omit both sugars by replacing them with maple syrup, honey, or even coconut sugar. If you opt for honey or syrup you may need to cook the mixture a bit longer to reduce the liquid.
- Dairy-Free – You can omit the butter from this compote recipe for a dairy-free version. However, I would then recommend adding 1/8 teaspoon of salt to balance the flavor out.
- Cozy Flavoring – Add in 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon for an extra cozy flavor element that pairs perfectly with fall and winter dishes.
- Brighter Flavor – For spring and summer dishes you can add a teaspoon of fresh lemon juice for a brighter note of flavoring.
- Serve It Warm – Though this berry compote is stored in the fridge, you can warm up a portion of the sauce in the microwave before serving.
How To Store Berry Compote
Once the Berry Compote has completely cooled, transfer it into a jar with an airtight lid such as a mason jar. Then Transfer it into the refrigerator to enjoy for up to a week.
For longer storage, you can also store the berry compote in a freezer-safe jar and then keep it in the freezer for up to 3 months.
