Would I Make This Again? Absolutely!

- bittersweet chocolate (at least 70% cocoa)
- vanilla bean paste (or extract)
- powdered sugar
- peppermint extract
How To Make Tini’s Hot Chocolate Recipe
A full recipe card with step-by-step photos and ingredient quantities can be found at the end of the post.
- Heat whole milk and heavy cream over medium heat in a small saucepan. Cook this mixture until steam begins to cover off of the top but yet isn’t simmering.
- Sift cocoa powder into the saucepan of heated milk and cream. Whisk this together until the ingredients are fully incorporated.
- Stir in the chopped bittersweet chocolate in two parts, stirring after each addition until the chocolate has fully melted.
- Add in the vanilla bean paste and then continue heating the hot chocolate for a couple of minutes. Afterward, remove the saucepan from the heat and set it aside while the whipped cream is prepared.
- Prepare the peppermint whipped cream by adding heavy cream, sifted powder sugar, vanilla bean paste, and peppermint extract into a medium-sized bowl. Whisk the ingredients together by hand or use a hand mixer until peaks form.
- Pour the rich hot chocolate into mugs and then top them with the homemade peppermint whipped cream! Garnish each mug with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or crushed peppermint candy if desired. Enjoy!
- Using high-quality chocolate and high-quality heavy cream is worth the splurge in this recipe! You’ll taste the delicious reward in every sip!
- Since the cocoa is made on the stovetop, be sure to chop your chocolate bar before beginning the recipe to avoid overcooking the other ingredients.
- Be sure to stir constantly to reduce the chances of burning the ingredients to the bottom of the pot.
- For a thick cup of hot chocolate, follow this hot cocoa recipe to a T! However, if you want it to have a thinner consistency, make this recipe using two full cups of whole milk, or milk of choice, and omit the heavy cream.
- It’s important to cook the hot chocolate for two minutes before removing it from the stovetop. This additional cooking time thickens the hot chocolate up to its thick, dreamy, Christmas movie consistency!
- Keep in mind that when making the whipped cream, soft peaks can be spooned on and will quickly melt into your hot chocolate. Whereas stiff peaks can be piped on top of your hot chocolate and will melt gradually. Therefore, beat or mix the whipped cream until your desired peaks form!
How To Serve Hot Cocoa
- This rich and creamy hot chocolate is an absolute velvety dream as-is!
- Serve it just like Tini with a heaping dollop of Peppermint Whipped Cream!
- Dress your mug of hot chocolate up by garnishing it with chocolate shavings, fun sprinkles, or crushed peppermint candy!
- Marshmallows are always a good idea! I’m partial to my Easy Homemade Marshmallow Recipe, but store-bought works too!
- Serve Tini’s hot chocolate with a full Hot Cocoa Bar! Not only is a DIY cocoa bar perfect for the holidays, but it’s also great for a chilly day of sledding, outdoor play, or when you’re enjoying a snowed-in day at home!
Homemade Hot Chocolate Variations
- The consistency of this hot chocolate is found in the heavy cream. Therefore, for a thick cup of hot chocolate keep the 1/2 cup of heavy cream. However, for a thinner variation, you can omit the heavy cream and replace it with more milk.
- Feel free to swap dark chocolate out for another chocolate bar of your choice.
- Whole milk can be replaced with your milk of choice just keep in mind it may alter the consistency and/or flavor of the hot chocolate.
- If you’re not a fan of peppermint whipped cream feel free to replace it with regular Homemade Whipped Cream.
- Spike your cup of hot chocolate into an adult beverage by adding alcohol!
How To Prepare Tini’s Hot Chocolate In Advance
You can prepare Tini’s Hot Chocolate ahead of time by making the cocoa, allowing it to cool, and then storing it in the fridge for up to 3 days. When ready to enjoy, pour the cocoa back into a saucepan and heat it slowly on the stovetop. You may need to add a splash of milk to loosen it up more as it cooks!
To prepare the hot chocolate ahead of time to serve at a party, gathering, or DIY Cocoa Bar, first make the recipe according to the recipe card instructions while at least tripling the batch. Once the hot chocolate has cooked on the stovetop, pour it into a slow cooker with the dial turned to “warm.” Just be sure to go back and stir the hot chocolate often!
