Ingredient Notes
These Brownie Christmas Trees will definitely be one of the easiest holiday recipes you make all season long! And that all starts with the ingredients list!
To make these edible Christmas trees you’ll need:
- Boxed Brownie Mix – You get to choose your favorite one!
- Additional Ingredients Your Mix Calls For – Usually oil, water, and eggs.
- An Extra Egg Yolk – This will help produce chewier brownies!
- White Frosting – Feel free to also choose your favorite or whip up a batch of homemade Classic Vanilla Buttercream Frosting!
- Green Food Coloring – To tint the jar of white frosting or homemade buttercream green! However, you could also just grab pre-tinted green buttercream in a jar as well!
- Sprinkles – Make sure they’re festive since they’ll act as the decorations on the Christmas trees!
- Candy Canes – These will be cut/broken down to be used as the stems of the trees!
How To Make These Christmas Tree Brownies
- Whisk together the bownie mix, the ingredients your box calls for, and the extra egg yolk. Be careful not to over mix the batter, just whisk until the flour disappears.
- Pour the batter into the parchment lined baking pan.
- Bake the brownies in the preheated oven. Then remove them once a toothpick inserted into the center of them comes out with a few streaks of batter.
- Cool the brownies in the pan on a cooling rack before moving the pan into the fridge.
- Mix the green food coloring into the jar of white frosting.
- Trim the edges off the brownies and then cut the brownies into triangles.
- Decorate with the green frosting and then add sprinkles!
- Stick a cut candy cane into the bottom of each tree to be the stem of the Christmas trees.
Frequently Asked Questions
How To Store
Keep these Christmas Trees stored in the fridge for up to a week. You could also store them in the freezer for 3 months!
Is There A Way To Make My Brownies Fudgy Instead Of Cakey?
I do have a few easy tips for fudgy brownies! First, make sure your eggs and butter (if your recipe calls for it) are both at room temperature.
Next, only stir your brownie batter to the bare minimum. And lastly, be sure not to overbake the brownies!
How Do I Cut The Brownies Neatly Into Christmas Trees?
The brownies cut a lot more neatly when they’re completely cooled. Depending on how dense your brownies are I’d suggest putting them in the freezer for a bit before cutting them!
Can I Just Spray The Pan With Non-Stick Cooking Spray?
It’s really important that the whole pan of brownies removes really well for this recipe. So unfortunately I do not recommend using the cooking spray.
However, if you don’t have parchment paper you could use tin foil instead.
Could I Use My Electric Mixer For This Recipe?
The goal is to keep these brownies as dense as possible so it’s important not to over-mix the batter. That being said, it’s really best to mix this batter by hand using a whisk and then a spatula.
The goal is to mix the batter just until the flour disappears.
Can I Use A Glass Baking Dish For These Brownies?
I do find that a light metal dish produces much chewier brownies. However, if you only have a glass baking dish that will be fine to use.
Can I Cover Each Brownie Tree In A Layer Of Frosting?
Of course! How much green frosting and the way you choose to frost the brownies are entirely up to you!
Just keep in mind that frosting the entire brownie will result in a much sweeter treat!

Brownie Christmas Trees
Equipment
- 9X9 baking pan
- Whisk
- Spatula
- Parchment paper
Ingredients
- 1 (18oz.) box brownie mix + Ingredients called for on back of box – usually oil, eggs, and water
- 1 additional egg yolk
- 1 (16oz.) tub vanilla frosting
- Green food coloring
- Sprinkles
- candy canes
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to the temperature recommended on the box of brownies mix.
- Prepare a 9×9-inch baking pan by lining it with parchment paper. Leave extra parchment paper hanging over the edges so they can be easily removed from the pan later.
- In a large bowl, whisk (or use a fork to mix) together the ingredients recommended on the box of brownies and 1 additional egg yolk. You don’t want to over-mix, so mix just until the flour disappears.
- Transfer the batter to the prepared baking pan and back according to box directions. Check the brownies a few minutes before the minimum time recommended on the box. You do not want to overbake them.
- Let the brownies cool in the pan on a wire rack.
- While the brownies are cooling, mix together the white frosting and green food coloring.
- Remove the brownies from the pan. Trim off outer edges.
- Do not cut the brownies unless they are completely cooled – if they are not – place them in the refrigerator and wait until they are completely cooled.
- There are two different ways to cut these depending on how large you want the trees to look. You can get 18 small trees by cutting the brownies into 3 long strips. Then cut the strips into triangles – this will make 3 rows with 6 triangles each. Cut 3 equal squares from each strip, then cut the squares in half on the diagonal.
- You can make 8 large trees by cutting the brownies in half down the middle. You will be able to cut 4 equal size triangles from each half. It will look like a zig-zag pattern and will work best if you trim a little off of each end, at an angle.
- Decorate with green icing and sprinkles. Stick a cut candy cane in the bottom of the triangle to be the stem of your Christmas tree.
