This Is The Best Sauce For Fish Tacos!
Fish Taco Sauce will be an instant hit with your family! I’ve never been a huge fish lover, but I do enjoy a good grilled fish tacos recipe every now and then. When I was in Mexico last month, we ordered some that were pretty much fresh out of the ocean, and they were so good.
They had this amazing seasoning on the fish, but I think it was really the fish taco sauce that took them over the edge! Because nothing flavors up a taco like a good crema recipe on a bed of fresh fruits and veggies!
This recipe is the best blend of flavor! I usually do eat sriracha or fish tacos … but I decided to try this out, and wow! My tastebuds were delighted! It was so delicious! I can’t wait to try it on other foods. So quick and easy to make. I will definitely recommend it, and it will be something I’ll make again!!!!! Thank you for the recipe. You just got a new follower and fan!
Readers love this recipe and have also been using it on burgers and as a vegetable dip! So I can’t wait to try this great recipe on those next! I bet it adds a nice zing to a grilled summertime burger! What will you use this sauce on?
Why Use This Sauce For With Fish?
The key to a good fish tacos recipe is the sauce! This sauce is a sour cream and mayonnaise-based sauce with a blend of lime juice, garlic powder, sriracha, and cumin with a touch of salt.
This sauce adds a yummy creaminess to balance the light and fresh ingredients traditionally in fish tacos!
Fish Taco Sauce Recipe Ingredients
All you need is a handful of pantry staple ingredients and a couple of other fresh ingredients to make this delicious Mexican-inspired sauce!
- Sour cream
- Mayonaise
- Lime juice
- Garlic powder
- Sriracha
- Cumin
- Salt
How Do You Make A Crema?
Making this sauce recipe is really easy to do!
- Begin by combining the sour cream, mayonnaise, sriracha, lime juice, garlic powder, cumin, and salt together in a small bowl.
- Next, chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours so the flavor can build.
- Finally, serve it fish tacos or anything else your heart desires!
It’s very important to let this fish taco sauce chill for at least 2 hours before first using it so the flavor can build.
I promise this Fish Taco Sauce will take your tacos to the next level. My family loves the flavors in this sauce; it’s a great mix of spicy sriracha, earthy cumin, and zesty lime with a bit of garlic and salt. You could add a couple of dashes of hot sauce for some kick too!
How To Serve This Sauce
When you combine it with fresh ingredients like pan-seared or grilled white fish or Mahi Mahi, avocados, pico de gallo, and fruit. Wrap it all in flour or corn tortillas, and you’re in for a delicious dinner loaded with flavor!
Fish tacos are best served right after the fish is done cooking. This means you’ll want to prep your sauce at least two hours before cooking and make sure any other ingredients are prepped too so you’re ready to assemble and enjoy everything fast.
Not only is it delicious on tacos, but it goes great on Steak Fajitas, too!
Fish Taco Toppings
I find that a great slaw can go a long way in tacos, but it’s the sauce that really brings everything together. Pickled red onions and avocado are other favorites of mine! As for cheese we tend to prefer queso fresco or cotija cheese. But you can use a shredded Mexican cheese blend also.
What Is Served With Fish Tacos?
Tacos can be great on their own, but if you want to make them a full meal, we love everything from cilantro lime rice and refried beans to seasoned french fries. And don’t forget to serve it with the best skinny margarita recipe!
Storing White Sauces
If you have leftovers, store the sauce in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks!

Excellent sauce. I made blackened salmon tacos. The sauce was perfect. I followed the recipe exactly.
Joan says
We don’t like sour cream, and I can’t stand yogurt. Can we just use mayonnaise?
Rebecca Hubbell says
Hi Joan, I’ve never made it without sour cream or yogurt, but without one of those, it’s really just flavored mayo as opposed to a sauce. If you think you’ll enjoy that on your tacos that go ahead and omit.
Amy says
You dont taste the sour cream
Shelley says
Omg! This sauce is the best. We love making fish or shrimp tacos. We love it. My husband wants fish tacos non stop now.

Made this today (2/3/20) in preparation for our fish tacos tonight. Added an avocado to the recipe (and omitted the garlic as I’m allium intolerant). Tasted great and can’t wait to try it tonight after it has been chilling in the fridge.

I’m so glad you enjoyed it Teri! Those sound like great substitutions!

My son and I absolutely love this sauce. I gave him the recipe (19 years old) and now when i make fish tacos he’s the sauce guy. He prepares it now for us. And there are NO leftovers. Thanks for sharing this recipe!!!

I love this recipe. I use it for fish, egg salad, as a veggie dip. It has just enough kick and keeps well in the fridge, so easy to make. Thank you

This was truly “Awesome Sauce” and everyone in my family agreed! We live in San Diego and are so lucky to have great fish tacos everywhere; however, recreating these flavors at home is not always the easiest thing. Even my most discriminating (18yo son) who is critical of EVERYTHING I make, absolutely loved this sauce. I love the richness and how quickly this came together.
We have a new favorite in our house that will be made many times, especially as spring and summer roll around!
Rebecca Hubbell says
So glad to hear it’s a new favorite! I hope you enjoy it often!
Deb Adam says
Gave this a four star rating, as the first batch I had to toss; it was way too salty! Made it again and left out the salt and it was perfect. There was enough salt in the mayo. I suggest leaving out the salt and taste before you add it.
Ann says
I love the sauce but i made it my own by changing it a little by using Mexican crema and adding cumin. It was wow.

So glad you were able to customize it and enjoyed it!

Delicious sauce, I couldn’t get enough! I added extra sriracha for a little more heat. Definitely worth making! I even put it on my hamburger the next night.
Rebecca Hubbell says
I’m so glad you loved it, Tamara! And burgers sounds like a great way to use up any leftover sauce! Might need to try that next time!
cakespy says
LOL this is perfect! I always want about triple the amount of sauce they put on fish tacos, and NOW IT SHALL BE MINE. Of course, I know that this will taste good on just about anything else i put it on (OK maybe not cake. But then, maybe cake? ). Thank you!
Julia says
That sauce sounds and looks so delicious! I love a good fish taco but haven’t yet found a great recipe for the sauce so I’ll definitely try your recipe soon. Great pictures!!
