Your choice of seasonal beverages just got a whole lot better thanks to this Hot Chocolate Coffee! This indulgent blend of thick and creamy hot chocolate and bold hot dark roast coffee is the perfect brunch or dessert beverage for the holidays as well as sipping on those chilly days!
This drink concoction brilliantly combines two of my favorite things: chocolate and coffee! And the result is a delectable drink that reminds me of the hot chocolate that’s described in the classic Christmas book, The Polar Express, which says the drink is, “as thick and rich as melted chocolate bars.”
Yeah, it’s THAT good! The combination of heavy cream, melted chocolate, and coffee makes for a rich and creamy Hot Chocolate Coffee that’s perfect to cozy up with as the chill season rolls in!
You can also expect this to be an instant hit with friends and family throughout the holiday season so prepare to double the batch for gatherings! Simply prepare a steaming pot of decadent French Hot Chocolate and then pour it over your favorite brewed coffee. In less than 10 minutes you’ll be caffeinating AND enjoying rich chocolate. A win-win!
Ingredients For Hot Chocolate Coffee
Hot Chocolate Coffee is made with a thick base of heavy cream, whole milk, confectioners’ sugar, and bittersweet chocolate. It’s then poured over freshly brewed dark roast coffee for extra richness and caffeine.
Then just like any classic cup of hot chocolate it’s finished off with a swirl of homemade whipped cream and garnished with chocolate shavings. If you’re feeling extra, you can even add some holiday sprinkles!
How To Make Hot Chocolate Coffee
- Heat whole milk, heavy cream, and powdered sugar together in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Heat until the mixture begins to bubble on the outer edges but do not allow it to come to a boil.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and then add in the chopped bittersweet chocolate and allow it to set. Afterward, whisk the chocolate mixture until a rich chocolate color forms.
- Pour hot coffee into your choice of mugs and then add the hot chocolate on top of it. Garnish each mug of hot chocolate coffee with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
Rebecca’s Recipe Tips
- Chopped Chocolate – Chop the chocolate bar up into pieces before adding it into the saucepan to allow for a more even melt.
- Heating – It’s important not to boil the milk, cream, and sugar mixture or it may burn which will lead to altering the final taste and texture. Only heat the mixture just until bubbles start to form on the outer edge.
- Consistency – The consistency of this hot chocolate is THICK, therefore don’t let it trick you into thinking it needs more time over the heat on the stovetop to thin out.
- Melting – If the chopped chocolate bar hasn’t completely melted, you can return the saucepan to the stovetop to heat on low while whisking until all of the chocolate has melted. Remember, don’t allow it to boil!
How To Store Hot Chocolate Coffee
Since this recipe does make 4 drinks you may have leftovers! If so, transfer any leftover hot chocolate coffee into an airtight container such as a mason jar. Then store the hot chocolate in the fridge to enjoy for up to 2 days.
The hot chocolate coffee can then be reheated in the microwave or stovetop in a saucepan.
Hot Chocolate Coffee Recipe Variations
Just like any good cup of coffee, you can customize this drink with a variety of options until it’s the perfect cup of hot chocolate coffee! Here are some variations you may want to try:
- Heavy Cream – Heavy cream can be substituted with half and half, more whole milk, or whatever milk you prefer. Just keep in mind that swapping out the heavy cream will result in a hot chocolate that’s not as thick and creamy.
- Decaf Coffee – If having caffeine mid-day isn’t for you then feel free to use decaf coffee in this recipe!
- Stronger Coffee – For a stronger coffee drink simply increase the amount of coffee in your cup of hot chocolate.
- Espresso – Swap out the coffee for a shot (or two!) of espresso.
- Chocolate – I prefer using a 60-70% bittersweet chocolate bar in this hot chocolate recipe. However, feel free to use semi-sweet, milk chocolate, or dark chocolate if you’d like.
- Spike It – Want chocolate, coffee, AND alcohol? Then spike the hot chocolate with a splash of Irish cream.
- Flavor – Add a dash of peppermint or a tablespoon of light brown sugar for different flavor variations!
