Kick off game day with this customizable Ham and Cheese Sliders Recipe! Use your favorite ham and cheese to ensure you deliver a batch of sliders that you and the crowd will actually enjoy!
Hawaiian Ham and Cheese Sliders
There’s enough pressure as it is on the big game day between hosting, who will win, and what to serve. Therefore, ease the day by confidently serving up appetizers your guests will eat AND enjoy, such as these Ham and Cheese sliders!
These classic sliders are easy to make, yet sometimes they’re overcomplicated, causing the taste and texture to fall flat. This party foul leaves guests hungry and you with a ton of food that no one ate.
To prevent this from happening, I kept the recipe simple with a 2-ingredient condiment layer, the most delicious meat and cheese, and then topped them off with a brush of savory melted butter! Making each bite just as irresistible as the first!
Though these sliders pack in big flavor, they’re still game-time-ready in under 20 minutes! No game? Then whip up a batch for dinner or a weekend lunch, and thank me later because your family will LOVE these for a meal!
Why you’ll love these Ham and Cheese Sliders on Hawaiian Rolls
Taste: Between the seasoned buttery brushed topping, smokey honey ham, and maple smoked cheddar cheese your taste buds are in for a sweet yet salty experience! Each bite will instantly make you want more so you can’t have just one slider!
Texture: The soft pillowy Hawaiian rolls with golden brown tops hold in tender meat that’s smothered in melty cheese!
Ingredients for Hawaiian Roll Ham Sliders
It goes without saying that this easy ham and cheese sliders recipe will taste best with your favorite ham and cheese! When I make these sliders, I always head to the deli counter at the grocery store to get my favorites.
I love making these sliders so that they come out with a sweet, salty, smoky flavor. Therefore, I grab honey ham and maple smoked cheddar cheese.
You can get your ham sliced or shaved, whichever you prefer. The important thing is just to be sure you cover the rolls with a nice even layer!
For sliders that aren’t as sweet, you can pair honey ham with Swiss cheese, and they turn out incredibly tasty!
How to make Ham and Cheese Sliders on Hawaiian Rolls
- Slicing The Rolls – These mini ham and cheese sliders are made on Hawaiian dinner rolls. So instead of cutting each little roll individually, you want to slice the entire block like you would a burger bun. The bottom layer will then be placed in the baking dish and be assembled as one whole sandwich!
- Choose Your Cheesy – If you love cheesy hot ham sliders then you’ll want to double up on the cheese layers! I like to put a layer of cheese below the ham and on top of the ham! For a less cheesy slider, you can just use one layer of cheese. Though I would recommend putting that cheese layer on top of the ham so that it melts down into the ham.
- Set Before Baking – Allow the assembled sliders to sit in the baking dish before transferring them to the oven to bake. This way the seasoned buttery topping can really seep into the sliders to add delicious flavor!
- Serve Warm – For the best melty cheese and ham slider experience be sure to serve these warm! However, I’m willing to bet these will disappear quickly so they won’t even get a chance to go cold!
How to serve Ham and Cheese Hawaiian Roll Sliders
As I mentioned before, these easy hot ham and cheese sliders are a great weeknight dinner recipe! But my family and friends really love when I make them for a game day appetizer as well!
Rightfully so because who doesn’t love cheering on their favorite team while eating tasty snacks as they try to win Super Bowl Bingo! To go along with these sliders, I’m also known to whip up Slow Cooker Grape Jelly Meatballs!
They’re such an easy dump and cook recipe! While those cook in the crockpot, I like to make some Bacon Wrapped Little Smokies to round off the snack table!
What Goes Good With Ham And Cheese Sliders?
If youre serving this on game day then pair it with lots of other appetizers, dips, and maybe even an Easy Football Cake!
However, if you’re enjoying this for dinner you can keep it simple by pairing them with chips and raw veggies with ranch dip! A potato or Broccoli Salad would also go great with them!
Some even love a side of grilled pineapple with these sliders!
How to store Hawaiian Ham and Cheese Sliders
Since this recipe is made with mayonnaise the sliders cannot be reheated after initial baking because it could make you sick! If you want to plan on leftovers, I’d suggest leaving out the mayo!
Ham and Cheese Sliders on Hawaiian Rolls FAQs
This may depend on your oven and how hot it bakes. Therefore, you can check for doneness by their appearance! If the tops of the buns are golden brown and the cheese is perfectly melted, then they’re done!
The sliders likely turned out soggy due to dense rolls, which would prevent them from being able to absorb the butter mixture.
Make sure that you give the sliders 10 minutes to sit before baking; it’s important not to skip this step! This 10-minute time is necessary to allow the rolls to absorb the butter so that they crisp up while baking, which in turn avoids soggy bottoms.
However, if you did allow the sliders 10 minutes to sit before baking and they still turned out soggy, then I’d say dense rolls were to blame.
The trick to preventing sliders from drying out is to cover them with aluminum foil for half of the baking time—the aluminum foil traps in moisture, which in turn prevents the sliders from becoming dry.
Eat these sliders up within two hours of coming out of the oven! This timeframe prevents you from being exposed to any bacteria that could cause illness.
How To Make Ham and Cheese Sliders:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and spray a 9 x 13-inch pan with cooking spray.
- Slice rolls like you would a burger bun and place bottom half in the pan and set the top half aside.
- In a small bowl, stir together the mustard and mayo and spread out on the bottom half of the rolls.
- Add 10 1/2 slices of the McKenzie Artisan Vermont Maple Smoked Cheddar Cheese to cover the mayo and mustard mixture, layer with slices of McKenzie Artisan Honey Uncured Ham and add the remaining 10 1/2 slices of cheese on top of the ham. Place the top half of the rolls back on top of the sliders.
- Whisk together melted butter, garlic powder, onion powder, and poppy seeds. Use a basting brush to brush the mixture evenly over the top of the rolls.

- Remove from oven and enjoy hot.

Notes
- For the ham, you can get it sliced or shaved (easier to pull apart), just be sure to try and cover the rolls with an even layer.
- Swiss Cheese may be used in place of cheddar.
- Feel free to use half the cheese (how my husband prefers these) if only doing one layer of cheese, I recommend doing it as the top layer so that it melts down into the ham.
- Mayonnaise and mustard can be left off or swapped out for another preferred condiment. But please make sure never to reheat sliders after initial baking if using mayonnaise because it could cause you to get sick.
