The Importance Of Heat Treating Flour
Consuming raw flour puts us at risk of getting sick from the germs and bacteria that can sometimes be found in flour. By heat treating the flour, we can then eat our favorite doughs and recipes safely!
To properly heat treat flour, it must reach a temperature of at least 160 degrees F. The high temperature then kills off any germs or bacteria that may be in the flour.
How To Heat Treat Flour At Home
Heat treating the flour can be done in two different ways. But both ways are quick and easy, so before you know it it’s ready to be used in your edible dough recipe of choice!
The first method is to spread the flour out in a thin layer on a rimmed baking sheet and bake it. This method takes just 5 to 6 minutes at 350 degrees F.
Another common method to heat treat flour is to just microwave it! Don’t worry, how to heat treat flour in the microwave is as easy as in the oven!
To do so, just add the flour to a microwave-safe bowl and stir it between intervals. With both methods, once the flour reaches a temperature of at least 160 Degrees F with a food thermometer, it’s safe to use.
Now that you know how to heat-treat flour in the oven, you’re ready to make edible cookie dough! I’d suggest you use heat treated flour in my Irish Cream Edible Cookie Dough, Edible Gingerbread Cookie Dough, or Cookie Dough Truffles! They’re everything you love about raw cookie dough but safe to eat without the risk of harmful bacteria!
Both are filled with delicious flavors that will have you making a second batch!
How Do I Know When The Flour Reaches The Right Temperature?
Simply use a kitchen thermometer (affiliate link) to check the temperature of the flour! Once it reads 160 Degrees F it’s safe to use.
Can I Save Heat Treated Flour?
Yes, you can heat treat your flour ahead of time since it can be saved in an airtight container at room temperature. I recommend using some parchment paper shaped like a cone to funnel it into the container. However, since it takes just a few minutes to heat treat it, I prefer to make a fresh batch whenever I need it.
How Will I Know If I Over Baked The Flour?
The flour is over baked if the temperature of it becomes too high. Unfortunately, you will likely notice a taste difference in your recipe if your flour is over baked!
Does This Method Work For Cake Or Brownie Mixes?
Yes! Once you know how to heat treat flour, you might find the method handy for other flour-based baking mixes. Some dessert dip recipes like my Edible Brownie Batter call to heat treat the mix first. And these methods are what I use when doing so!
