These Oreo Thumbprint Cookies deliver you cookies on cookies! Yup, you guessed it – this recipe takes cookie dough and rolls it in crushed cookies for a double cookie treat!
And not just any double cookie treat but a deliciously chewy, crunchy cookies and cream-flavored dessert! The popular mouthwatering flavor is brought to your taste buds with a simple cream cheese sugar cookie dough, Double Stuf Oreo crumbs, and a cookie and cream Hershey’s Kiss!
What Are Thumbprint Cookies?
Thumbprint cookies are often buttery shortbread cookies or sugar cookies that have an indentation on top that can be filled with jam, preserves, chocolate, or Hershey’s Kisses, like in this recipe. Thumbprint cookies can also be rolled in granulated sugar, crushed nuts or cookies, or even shredded coconut before baking.
Though I love these Oreo Thumbprint Cookies, I’m also known to devour S’mores Thumbprint Cookies and Turtle Thumbprint Cookies as well!
Ingredients For Oreo Thumbprint Cookies
- Double Stuf Oreos
- One Package of Refrigerated Sugar Cookie Dough
- Whipped Cream Cheese
- All-Purpose Flour
- Cookies and Cream Hershey Kisses
To make the dough for these thumbprint cookies, all-purpose flour, whipped cream cheese, and refrigerated cookie dough are combined. To keep these cookies light and chewy, whipped cream cheese should be used for best results, but regular can be used too in a pinch.
Whipped cream cheese has a fluffier, lighter consistency that’s been whipped to add air to it, whereas regular cream cheese is solid and dense. Don’t worry, though; the cream cheese taste is still the same as regular cream cheese; it’s just the texture that sets them apart!
After the dough is made, it’s rolled into crushed Double Stuf Oreos and baked. Once the cookies come out of the oven, they’re topped with a Cookies and Cream Hershey Kiss!
Substitutions And Variations
- Chocolate Cookies – To create a chocolate cookie variation of these Oreo Thumbprint cookies, simply omit the flour and add 1/3 of unsweetened cocoa powder.
- Additional Oreos – For more Oreo flavor, crush up a few additional Oreos and add the crumbs to the cookie dough. Be sure to roll the cookies into the Oreo crumbs the recipe calls for!
- Hershey Kisses – Feel free to make these cookies with other flavors of Hershey Kisses! Try them with milk chocolate kisses or Hershey’s Hugs that are wrapped with white chocolate. Since the cookies themselves are rolled in Oreos, you’ll still get plenty of Cookies and Cream flavor!
- Drizzle – Melt a Hershey’s Cookies and Cream bar in the microwave until smooth, and then drizzle it over the finished cookies. The added drizzle would make for a fun, tasty finish!
How To Make Cookies and Cream Thumbprint Cookies
Step 1: Pulse the Double Stuf Oreos in a food processor until fine crumbs form. Then, transfer the Oreo crumbs into a medium bowl and set it aside.
Step 2: Beat the package of refrigerated sugar cookie dough with the whipped cream cheese and all-purpose flour into the bowl of a stand mixer. Stop to scrape the sides of the bowl down as needed.
Step 3: Portion out the cookie dough using a small cookie scoop, pressing the scoop against the sides of the bowl to level it off. Note that the scoop shown is a medium (2-tablespoon) scoop and will also work, but we liked the ratio of dough to chocolate in the small scoop test more, so that’s what we call for in the recipe.
Step 4: Roll the ball of cookie dough in the Oreo crumbs until coated.
Step 5: Transfer the Oreo-covered cookie ball onto a baking sheet that’s lined with parchment paper.
Step 6: Bake the Cookies and Cream Thumbprint Cookies and then allow them to cool on the pan for a few minutes.
Step 7: Unwrap the Cookies and Cream Hershey Kisses, then press them gently into the top of each cookie on the pan. Afterward, allow the cookies to sit for a few minutes longer and then transfer them to a wire rack to cool to room temperature.
Step 8: You can use a toothpick to swirl the melted kiss so that it looks like a puddle or let the kiss reharden to keep its shape.
Oreo Thumbprint Cookies Recipe Storage
Store these thumbprint cookies in an airtight container or a Ziploc bag with the excess air squeezed out of it. Then, keep them at room temperature to enjoy for up to 2 days.
How To Serve Cookies and Cream Thumbprint Cookies
These are best enjoyed the same day they’re made when the cookies are still soft yet have a crunchy texture. This is because the cookies will soften the Oreo crumbs, resulting in a soft cookie crumb coat instead of a crunchy one.
Serve them up as a delicious after-dinner treat, bring them to parties or potlucks, or make them to add some spontaneous joy to your kids’ day!
Cookies and Cream Thumbprint Cookies FAQs
Can I use a silicone baking mat instead of parchment paper?
Yes, a silicone baking mat can be used instead. Just keep a close eye on the cookies as they bake since the silicone baking mats tend to bake the cookies faster than parchment paper.
How do I turn the Oreos into crumbs without a food processor?
Place the Double Stuf Oreos into a Ziploc back, squeeze out the excess air, and seal it. Then, take a rolling pin and roll it over the bag until the cookies turn into fine crumbs.
Can I still make these cream cheese thumbprint cookies if I don’t have a stand mixer?
A stand mixer does make it easier to mix this recipe since the dough is thicker. However, you can definitely still make this cookie recipe without one!
You can try using an electric hand mixer to mix the dough or just mix by hand.
How many cookies does this recipe yield?
This recipe yields two dozen cookies when the dough is portioned out using a small cookie scoop that fits about 4 tablespoons of dough.
Can these Oreo Thumbprint Cookies be made with regular Oreos instead of Double Stuf?
Yes, you can make these cookies with regular Oreos instead, though the Double Stuf does make for a slightly sweeter cookie.
Do I need to create an indentation on the cookies before placing the kiss onto them?
No, as you press the Hershey’s kiss into the warm cookie, it will create an indent that hugs and holds the kiss in place perfectly!
