Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Use Gel Food Coloring?
You can use gel food coloring, but if you decide to use it, do not put it directly into ice-cold ingredients. It will become next to impossible to fully dissolve the food coloring and you will end up with lumps of green in your punch.
To avoid this, stir the gel food coloring into ¼ cup warm water until it is completely dissolved. Once dissolved, you can add it in with the rest of the ingredients. Repeat the process until you reach your desired shade of green. I started by squeezing about an inch long amount of gel food coloring and that was perfect for me.
My Store Doesn’t Carry Limeade, Can I Substitute It For Something Else?
If you don’t have access to limeade, you can always substitute it for some fresh lemonade. You can use my favorite lemonade recipe or buy it from the store. The fresher the better for this recipe!
How Do You Serve It?
You can keep it as simple or as fun as you want. You can just top it with more sherbet or you can garnish with lime slices and mint or even candy!
My Store Doesn’t Carry Lime Sherbet, Can I Use A Different Flavor Instead?
If your store doesn’t carry lime sherbet, you have a couple of different options. You can always grab an additional quart of rainbow sherbet and use that or experiment with some of the other flavors they have available. Even though I haven’t tried it with different flavors, I don’t think you can go wrong with this recipe as long as you are using sherbet and not ice cream.
Can I Make It Ahead Of Time?
In my experience, this punch doesn’t keep very well. It tends to go flat after sitting out for an extended period of time and once the rainbow sherbet melts it turns everything brown. ☹ Even though it still tastes great, the color can be a bit off-putting. I would advise making this just before people start drinking it and only make what you need at the time. Start with one punch bowl and go from there. I always have extra ingredients on hand, because this tends to go quick though!
Can I Make This Alcoholic?
Do you want an adult-friendly version? Pour in 1.5 oz vodka (or your alcohol of choice) per cup to make this a boozy spring punch.
Can I Make It A Different Color?
Absolutely! If you have a special occasion coming up and you want this to be pink or blue or orange – just use that color food coloring! You can also use a different flavor of sherbet, like orange or raspberry!

Rainbow Sherbet Punch
Ingredients
- 4 cups sparking white grape juice1
- 52 oz limeade I used Simply Limeade
- 2 liters lemon lime soda2
- Ice
- 10 drops green food coloring or until it reaches your desired shade
- 1 quart lime sherbet
- ½ quart rainbow sherbet for topping
- fresh limes optional topping
- fresh mint optional garnish
Instructions
- In a large punch bowl, combine sparkling white grape juice, limeade, lemon lime soda, lime sherbet, and ice together.
- Stir in the food coloring until the punch reaches the desired shade of green.
- Scoop the lime sherbet into the punch bowl and stir. Before you add in your lime sherbet, make sure there is enough room from the top of the punch bowl to add it so that it doesn’t overflow and make a mess. I made sure there was 2 to 3 inches of leeway before adding in my sherbet.
- Once your lime sherbet is stirred in, top with rainbow sherbet for a pop of color (and flavor!).
- Use a ladle to pour punch into individual glasses. Feel free to top each glass with an extra scoop of sherbet, a slice of lime, and fresh mint.
Notes
- Make sure to buy the white sparkling grape juice instead of the red!
- Ginger ale may also be used.
- It’s best to make this with cold ingredients so the ice doesn’t melt as quickly.
- Make just before servng for best results.
- If you have a special occasion coming up and you want this to be pink or blue or orange – just use that color food coloring! You can also use a different flavor of sherbet, like orange or raspberry!
