Taking a bite into one of these Twix Cookies instantly floods your mouth with the flavors of the classic candy bar that we all love! The homemade cookie base is topped with rich, sticky caramel and then finished off with smooth melted chocolate!
Twix is one of my favorite candy bars! To the point, I’ve even made Twix Caramel Brownies that are filled with actual mini Twix bars!
And while this cookie recipe doesn’t have actual Twix in them, they do taste exactly like them! The only difference is the flavor is in the form of a soft, chewy cookie that’s made right at home using mostly pantry staple ingredients!
Ingredient Notes
The first step in this Twix Cookies Recipe is making the sweet cookie base! This is made with salted butter, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, baking powder, and all-purpose flour.
Once the dough has chilled, been cut out, and then baked you’ll begin working on the rich caramel layer. This is easily made by using just caramel bits, whole milk, and salt.
I used Kraft caramel bits but you can also use about any package of wrapped caramels. Once melted, the caramel is then added to the completely cooled cookies.
After the layer of caramel has firmed up you’ll finish the cookies off with its smooth chocolate layer! To make this you simply melt milk chocolate chips with vegetable oil until smooth.
How To Make Twix Cookies
- Cream the butter and sugar together.
- Add in the vanilla extract, baking powder, and all-purpose flour. Mix the dough together until well combined.
- Shape the dough into a disk and then wrap it with plastic wrap. Refrigerate the cookie dough disk.
- Prepare the work surface by sprinkling flour on it, a rolling pin, and the round cookie cutter. Then roll the chilled cookie dough out.
- Cut the cookies out with the cookie cutter.
- Bake the cookies in the oven on a baking sheet that’s lined with parchment paper. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool.
- Microwave the caramel bits and milk until smooth.
- Stir in the salt.
- Place caramel onto each cookie, using a spoon to swirl it into a circle. Allow this to firm up before adding the chocolate.
- Melt the chocolate in the microwave until smooth. Then place melted chocoalte on top of the set caramel.
- Swirl the melted chocolate into a circle on top. Be sure to mostly cover the caramel while also leaving a border around the edge of the cookie.
- Set the chocolate by leaving the cookies at room temperature or placing them in the fridge. Then enjoy!
Frequently Asked Questions
How Do I Store These Twix Cookies?
Keep them at room temperature in an airtight container and enjoy them for up to 5 days!
Can I Freeze These Cookies?
Unfortunately, they don’t freeze that great once the caramel and chocolate are added. However, you could freeze the baked cookies for up to 3 months. Then when you’re ready to enjoy them you can add the caramel and chocolate once they’ve thawed.
Could I Make The Cookie Dough Ahead Of Time?
Yes, this cookie dough can be made ahead of time! Once it’s made you can store it in the refrigerator. Then just use it within 3 days or if in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Do I Have To Chill The Dough?
I find it to be necessary since the dough is much easier to roll out and cut more neatly. The dough also holds its shape much better if it starts out chilled. So I wouldn’t recommend skipping this easy step!
Is This Recipe One That Doubles Easily?
It sure is! If you need a larger batch just simply double every ingredient.
Can I Use Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips In This Recipe?
Yes, though it may slightly change the final flavor of the cookies. However, they’ll definitely still be delicious!
How Can I Make Spreading The Caramel Easier?
Try spraying non-stick cooking spray onto the spoon you’re using to spread the caramel.
What Should I Do If The Caramel Is Too Thick To Spread?
The caramel may just need to warm up a bit in the microwave. If that doesn’t do the trick then try adding a little more milk to it and then heating that through.
Can I Make Mini Twix Cookies?
Of course! You can choose whatever size cookie cutter you’d like. Just keep in mind that the smaller the cookies are the trickier it may be to spread the layers onto. You’ll also need to reduce the bake time.
One of my favorite parts of these Twix Cookies is that sweet, sticky layer of sweet caramel! If you love caramel as much as I do, then check out more desserts that are also filled with that same rich flavor!

Twix Cookies
Equipment
- Stand mixer
- Parchment paper
- Measuring Cups
- Measuring spoons
- Wire cooking rack
- Microwave safe bowl
Ingredients
Cookies
- ½ cup salted butter softened
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup all-purpose flour plus extra for dusting the counter and cookie cutter
Caramel
- 11 ounces Kraft caramel bits or 1 package of wrapped caramels
- 1 tablespoon whole milk
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Chocolate
- 1½ cups milk chocolate chips
- 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
- In a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.½ cup salted butter, ½ cup powdered sugar
- Add the vanilla, baking powder, and flour and mix until well combined.1 teaspoon vanilla extract, ½ teaspoon baking powder, 1 cup all-purpose flour
- Shape the cookie dough into a large disc and wrap it with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.
- Sprinkle some flour on a clean counter and a rolling pin. Roll the dough out to ¼-inch thick. Use a 2½-inch round cookie cutter (flour this as well to keep it from sticking) and cut out the cookies.
- Bake the cookies on the prepared baking sheet for 7 to 10 minutes. You want them to be set (no longer glossy), but not turning brown.
- Transfer the cookies to a wire rack and let them cool completely.
- Add the caramel bits and milk to a medium-sized, microwave-safe bowl and microwave for 1 minute. Stir well, then heat at 20-second intervals just until smooth. Stir in the salt.11 ounces Kraft caramel bits, 1 tablespoon whole milk, ¼ teaspoon salt
- Place 1 teaspoon of the caramel mixture onto each cookie. Use the spoon to swirl this in a circle on the top, leaving an empty border around the edge of the cookie. You want this to firm up before adding the chocolate. It will take up to ½ hour at room temperature, or you may place them in the fridge to speed it up.
- Stir together the chocolate chips and the vegetable oil in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave at 30 seconds intervals, stirring between each one until smooth.1½ cups milk chocolate chips, 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
- Place one teaspoon of melted chocolate on top of the set caramel. Again, swirl it into a circle on top, mostly covering the caramel, leaving a border around the edge of the cookie. Feel free to top with flaky salt, if desired!
- Once the chocolate is set (again, you can speed this up by refrigerating them), you may finally enjoy eating them!
